Mommy + Me

I started my little blog in January 2015 and not even two weeks later, I found out that I was pregnant with my little V. While my dreams of having a fashion blog were put on hiatus to talk about the little miracle growing in my belly, in the back of my mind I was so excited to be able to blog posts with what I hoped, was a daughter.

I think that every Mom that hope for a daughter is excited about the idea of dressing them like you. They are your little Mini Me and twining with them is so much fun. Lucky for me, we were blessed with a daughter so my dreams of twinning and Mommy and Me blog posts were going to come true. Now here we are, a year and a half later, and my sweet little daughter is co-starring in her very first, Mommy and Me blog post!

My utility jacket has been a favorite in my closet for a few years now. I love its versatility and how it can be paired with almost anything. It is true a staple piece in my wardrobe and I treat it as a neutral. When I walked into Carter’s over Winter Break and so a utility jacket in Vivi’s size, there was not even a question of if I needed to get it for her. I knew right away that it was coming home with us so Vivi could match her Mommy.

For my look, I paired my utility jacket with this gorgeous mustard blouse from Forever 21. I have been obsessed with this color for a while now. I use to feel like I couldn’t wear the color yellow because it would wash me out, but as I have gotten older, I realize that it all about finding the right shade of a certain color. For me, mustard totally smashed all of my fears of wearing yellow and now it is a color that I wear frequently. To go with the blouse, I have these amazing suede slides. I was immediately drawn to them in the store. They are so comfy and they are beyond perfect for Spring and Summer. They are also from Forever 21 but I linked a similar pair for you below. My jeans are the best pair of destroyed denim. My go-to store for destroyed denim is, hands down, American Eagle. They have the best options at a very reasonable price.

When I was picking out Vivi’s outfit, I knew that I wanted her outfit to go with mine but not necessarily be so matchy-matchy. Her utility jacket was a must so I just put her in skinnies and picked out a color top that looked good with my yellow. The little blue peplum she has on is older but I linked a similar style below. Her bow is from a subscription service called Little Poppy Co. For less than $20 a month, they send you three adorable, hand-made bows for your little girl to wear. You can choose an elastic band or an alligator clip. If you enter the code MRSFOWLER at checkout, you can save 30% off of your first month!

I hope that you enjoyed my little guest host on today’s post. Vivi is growing so much every day and I just love being her Mommy. She is such a happy little girl and is always in the best mood. She wave at everyone she meets, is constantly blowing kisses and is obsessed with Peppa the Pig. She is smart, strong and curious and is definitely going to keep me on my toes. I thank God daily for this wonderful blessing and I am so honored that he chose me to be her Mommy. You can expect to see her on many posts in the future. She is a total ham and will say cheese as soon as you pull out a camera! I don’t know what I ever did to deserve her but I am certainly trying to give her the best life possible!

Walking Back to Basics

As I get older, I have found that my style has really evolved into something that is specific to me. Lately, I tend to stay away from the pieces that are considered “trendy” and stick more with something classic or what I know will work for me.

jhillisphoto_4408

This look was a way that I could implement a few trendy pieces into my wardrobe while still buying classic pieces. by sticking with classic black and denim, I was able to portray a chic look that still had some fun, trendy details.

jhillisphoto_4418

jhillisphoto_4372

This fun sweater has the cutest ruffle, peplum hem. It really adds a touch of whimsy to the outfit. The fact that it is a classic black sweater, though, means that I am going to be able to use it with multiple pieces and allow it become a staple in my wardrobe for years to come.

You can never go wrong with a great pair of denim and this pair is no exception. They fit great which is the most important part of any pair of denim. I urge you to not focus so much on the size when trying on a pair of denim and, instead, try to get a pair that looks good and fits you well. Too tight jeans can make you look bigger than you actually are and baggy denim can make you look shorter. Every single pair of denim is going to fit you differently so it is crucial that you try on multiple sizes and styles to find what works for you. The pair that I chose is slightly high-waisted giving me a little extra control in the tummy area. They also have a great flare leg which helps to elongate the leg.

jhillisphoto_4422

jhillisphoto_4262

I keep my accessories very simple and classic. I went with this gorgeous Kendra Scott necklace in a fun color and my favorite leopard flats. A little leopard really adds a fun pop to any outfit and since it has practically become a neutral, it is trend that you can utilize on a daily basis with almost any outfit.

jhillisphoto_4405

jhillisphoto_4366

Bottom line, you should be wearing pieces that make you look and feel great. For me, I know that I can never go wrong with classic black and a pair of great fitting denim. Everything else is just a little extra icing on the cake!

Oh! And check out my precious little family! Vivi is getting so big and has the sweetest little personality. Justin and I are so lucky to be her Mommy and Daddy! Her adorable matching bow and scarf are locally made and I will tag the seller below!

Flighty Floral

I am always on the lookout for beautiful clothes that mesh with my busy life. As a Wife, Mom, Teacher and Blogger, I almost always have a full plate. It is important that my clothes not only look great but they need to also make me feel great. I want to be able to run and move. I need to be able to chase after my toddler and I need to be able to get on the floor and help my Kindergartners.

jhillisphoto_3143

I was beyond thrilled when I was approached by Pink Blush to potentially work them. When I was pregnant, I loved everything from Pink Blush Maternity. Everything always fit and looked great. This was so important, especially on days that I felt like a beached whale! I was excited to see that they also carry a Women’s line that is perfect for the busy Mom. They pride themselves on being able to dress you from pregnancy onto motherhood. So many pieces are nursing friendly and all of them are very well made. They will withstand spit up, throw up, and maybe even poop, because let’s get real, accidents are just a part of motherhood! They are also very professional meaning that I can easily wear anything to work and know that I look great.

jhillisphoto_3079jhillisphoto_3037

I chose the beautiful Floral Print Maxi Dress in teal. I loved the beautiful color and pattern and I knew that it would be very versatile in my wardrobe. While it does come with long sleeves, it was a particularly chilly day so I threw on one of my favorite cardigans for some extra warmth.

jhillisphoto_2889

jhillisphoto_2963

Many of my accessories are from friends that on their own small business. My earrings are from Ayla Jane Designs on etsy and they are made of leather. They are so lightweight and comfortable that I forgot that I am wearing them. My adorable coffee cozy is from my friend Lynn Girl Designs on etsy. She makes some of the cutest coffee cozies and she makes the most amazing beanies to fit your messy bun! They are called Bunnies! How fun is that?

jhillisphoto_3047jhillisphoto_2936

I really try to shop small whenever possible and that is what I love about all of these businesses. They are all out there working hard and making a living. It is not about supporting another Big Box Retailer. It is about putting food on tables and sending little girls to dance class. I urge you to check out each of these businesses and show them a little love.

Happy 1st Birthday Vivilyn

Happiest of Birthdays to my sweet, sweet Vivilyn! On September 3rd we celebrated her 1st birthday and it has been a whirlwind of a year!

This little piece of Sunshine of the bright spot in all of my days. I miss her when I am not with her and just looking at her precious face can instantly put on smile on my face. While it has not always been easy, this past year has been, hands down, the best year of my life. I cannot imagine my life without her smiling face.

Being a Mother, specifically Vivi’s mother, has been so incredibly rewarding. I never knew how much love that I was capable of until I brought her into this world. One of my favorite quotes that I found is, “No one else will know the strength of my love for you. After all, you are the only one knows what my heart sounds like from the inside.” For me, that sums up motherhood. The bond that I have with my daughter can never be replaced because she is a literal piece of me, and to me, that piece is a piece of my heart.

After this year, if I could give just one piece of advice it would be to enjoy every single minute. Let the dishes pile up, go without a shower, take all the pictures… do everything you possibly can to soak up every minute you can. They grow so fast and when you blink it has all flashed by in an instant. Don’t stay so busy that your life is happening around you and you miss it happening. In the end, you won’t regret not doing the dishes, you will regret not playing on the carpet for just a little bit longer.

I am looking forward to all of the years to come and all of the birthdays that will be celebrated. Life with Vivi is just so much more fun! I could have not asked for a more happy, fun-loving, chill baby. My husband and I are blessed beyond measure and I thank God daily for choosing me to be her Mom.

Our life is not perfect. We have tantrums and fits, we throw food and we pull hair. The dishes do pile up and some weeks I may have not washed my hair in five days. Vivi cries at her photo shoot and Mommy cries at the pictures that are not getting taken.. but at the end of the day we are making memories. They are all memories that I will look back on and laugh and enjoy. I am so thankful for the whole year of memories that I have had the pleasure of making with this sweet girl and I cannot wait to see what the future has in-store for our little family!

As a busy Mom, who is constantly on the go, I am always looking for products that make my life easier. That is why I was so excited to discover Cover Me Ponchos!

So Fresh and So Clean With BeautyCounter Baby

I was recently sent some products from a line called BeautyCounter Baby to try out on my sweet Vivi. BeautyCounter Baby is a line of baby products that are made from simple ingredients. They have been meticulously researched and tested so you know that what you are putting on your sweet babe’s skin is safe and natural. It gently cleanses and protects their delicate skin and leaves Mom worry-free.

IMG_9455-0

We were sent three products to try out and see how we like them. The first product was the Baby Gentle All-Over Wash. This wash nourishes and cleanses delicate skin with a tear-free formula. It was a scent free so I know that their would be no harsh chemicals on Vivi’s delicate skin. I am actually allergic to a preservative that is found in a lot of products so I really try to read ingredients labels in Vivi’s products as well. I don’t want to run the risk of her being allergic to the same preservative and potentially breaking out. It also keeps me safe since I am the one who is bathing her and coming into contact with the products.

IMG_9461-0

The next product was the Baby Daily Protective Balm. The balm soothes and protects with organic shea butter and organic jojoba oil. Since it is a balm, it is really thick so I can put a nice coating on whatever I need to use it for. We have used it on Vivi’s diaper rash and it gets rid of redness as well as forms a water-proof barrier to prevent future diaper rash from forming. I also use it around her mouth to get ride of her drool rash. It literally works over night to get rid of the unsightly rash from around her little mouth. I also know that it is safe if it accidentally gets in her mouth so that definitely helps with my Mom worry!

IMG_9457-0

The last product was the Baby Soothing Oil. This oil calms and easily absorbs into skin with organic coconut, jojoba, and sunflower oils. I love to massage it into Vivi’s skin after a bath. If keeps her delicate skin soft and smooth and the massage really helps to calm her down before bed.

IMG_9456-0

So far, we have really enjoyed each of these products. I know that they are safe for her delicate skin and I don’t have to worry about either one of us having an allergic reaction.

In the words of Christy Coleman, Head of Innovation, “Babies are clean and pure- and they deserve products that are exactly the same. Unscented and uncomplicated formulas that deliver are the only skincare necessities your baby needs.”

These products definitely meet all of our needs. I urge you all to give them a try. Check them out through my friend Abbey at BeautyCounter.com!

DIY Baby Food

Something that I always wanted to do when I became a Mother was make baby food for my little one. Now that my sweet Vivi is eating solids, I have plenty of opportunities. In fact, I have made almost 90% of all the food that she has ever eaten!

I love being able to do this for her and I like knowing exactly what is going into her precious little body. There is so many hormones and chemicals in the foods that we eat today and I just don’t want her tiny little body to have to process all of that junk!

The best part about making her food though is how cheap and easy it is to do! I work full time as a teacher, take care of Vivi, make dinner almost every night and still  find time to make all of her food!

Want to know how easy it is?? Well let’s get started!!

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

IMG_0402-0

The first thing that you need to do is get together all of the supplies for the food that you want to make. For today’s post, I am going to show you how I make green beans, sweet peas, carrots and sweet potatoes. I buy the green beans and the sweet peas in the freezer section and I buy fresh carrots and sweet potatoes. You are also going to need all of the burners on your stove, your oven, a food processor, ice cube trays and a spatula.

Step 2: Prepare Your Ingredients

IMG_0413-0

In three separate pots, I bring to a boil the green beans, the sweet peas and the carrots. The carrots have been peeled and cut up into chunks that will fit easily into the food processor. Once the water has reached a good boil, I reduce the heat to simmer, cover and cook for about 1 hour. The longer the vegetable boil, the more tender they will become. If your baby is able to chew, you make want to boil for less time so that the veggies are more like table food.

IMG_0404-0

The sweet potatoes are cleaned with a potato brush and placed on a baking sheet. I then put them into my pre-heated oven on 350 degrees for about an hour. The bigger the potato, the longer it will need to cook.

Step 3: Puree All Day

IMG_0433-0

Ok… so you are not literally going to puree all day, but I thought the saying was catchy… so let’s go with it!

I usually give my veggies time to cool before I begin to puree them in the food processor. It is easier to work with them when they are a cool and you are less likely to burn yourself! I usually cook the food one night and then place it in the fridge to cool down so that the next night I am easily able to puree it down.

IMG_0434-0

The only thing that you have to do it fill your food processor with the food that you are trying to puree and hold down the puree button till you reach the consistency that you desire. As you can see from my pictures, I started with good size chunks of carrots and was able to puree them down to a mush-like consistency.

Step 4: Serving-Sized Storage

IMG_0435-0

Once you have pureed your veggies down to the consistency that you desire, I find it best to store them in ice cube trays. This method makes freezing and storing super easy and it also helps to even your food out into equal portions. I also find that the size of the cube is perfect when starting out on solids. As baby grows and requires more food it is easy to just add another cube into their bowl.

IMG_0436-0

I always freeze the food that I make because I don’t want to run the risk of it spoiling in the refrigerator. Once the food has frozen solid I just crack the cubes out of the tray and store the baby food cubes in labeled freezer bags.

Step 5: Dinner is Served

IMG_0438-0

As you can see, the veggies freeze easily into the perfect sized cubes that easily pop out! I then just defrost the cube in the microwave and dinner is served!

IMG_0408

And just look how happy all of this makes my sweet girl!!

Now I urge all you Momma’s to go out and try this!! If I can do it, you can do it!! It is so easy, so much better for your baby and you will save so much money!! I make all of Vivi’s fruits and veggies this way and she loves them all!!

Let me know if you have any questions in the comments below! Also, if you already make your own baby food then let me know what works for you! Or share one of your baby’s favorite recipes! Either way, I love hearing from you all!

XOXO,

Mrs. Fowler
