A Letter to my Students

Today was the first day of school.

This is my 9th year of teaching but I don’t feel like a pro by any means. I am always learning, always growing, and forever changing something. For this reason, I still get super nervous on the day before the first day.

The night before the first day of school I always have a hard time sleeping. I feel like a kid on Christmas morning. I am full of so many different emotions that I find it almost impossible to sleep. I feel excitement for the new memories I will make, nervousness for the possibility of problems, and even a little fear. Being a teacher is hard. We are expected to be so much for our students and perform so many different jobs. It can be both mentally and physically exhausting. There have been many times that I considered giving up but I persevered. I focused on the fact that I felt like I had been given a gift to teach. I focused on the fact that my smiling face and warm hugs may the only ones that they would receive all year. I focused on the fact that my words of encouragement could help them through the most impossible of situations. Now here I am, about to begin my 9th year of teaching and I am just as nervous as I was during year one. I know, however, that I am not alone in feeling these nerves. I know that there are 25+ Kindergarten babies getting ready to come to school and see me on their very first day, that are feeling those exact same nerves. So since I found it hard to sleep, I decided to write a letter to my new students.

To My Kindergarten Babies,

Let me start by saying that I am honored to be your teacher. God put us in each other’s lives for a reason I am so excited to see His perfect plan unfold. I know that with His help and guidance, this is going to be a great year.

I can imagine that you are unbelievably scared and nervous. It must be hard to enter such a big school, leaving your Mom, Dad, and younger sibling behind to learn all about your letters and numbers. So many of you have never attended PreK so I can imagine that this is very overwhelming. I want you to know that is perfectly normal to feel scared and nervous. I feel those same emotions every time I step foot into this classroom. I try so hard to be the best teacher possible for you and that can be a very exhausting job. I am constantly making plans, finding resources, and changing around my classroom to make sure that you are getting the best from me. It is very scary to think that if I make a mistake, I am held directly responsible for potentially messing up your education. I would NEVER want anything like that to happen so I am always trying to be my best for you.

When I say that I am going to be my best, I mean that I am going to be the best in all that I do. First and foremost, I am going to be the best teacher possible, but I will not stop at just teaching. I am going to be friend to you when someone says something that may not be so nice. I am going to be your nurse and bandage your knee when you fall down. I am going to be your coach and encourage you to do your best. I am going to be like a Mother and hug you when you are sad.

I promise to be all that you need me to be in the few hours that you are with me each day. Life is hard but I will try so hard to make it that much better for you. Please know that if I do have to fuss, I am coming from a place of love and compassion. I only want what is best from you and sometimes that means that we have to stop playing and listen. I hope you never feel like I don’t care because in truth, I love each of you as if you were my own children. I promise to do everything I possibly can to keep you safe and healthy while you are in my care. In our classroom we are a family.

Savannah, Georgia Life and Style Blogger, Being Mrs. Fowler, A Letter to My Students, Kindergarten Teacher, Teacher Blogger, Mickey Classroom, Disney Classroom

If you get upset, I ask that you please tell me. I want to know if I have hurt your feelings so that I can make necessary changes to be better for you. I am not perfect and will make mistakes so I hope that you will teach me and help me to be better during those times. Just as you will need me, I will also need you.

Even though we will only be together for a short time, our lives will forever be touched by one another and for that, I thank you. The chance to be your teacher is already making me into a better person. You are impacting my life more than you will ever know and I will remember each and every one of you for many years.

I leave you with one final thought. Today, you are beginning your educational journey. You are about to spend the next thirteen years learning and discovering who you want to make of your life. I want to encourage you to dream big. I want you to become more than you ever could have imagined. Today is the first day of the rest of your life and you have a chance to make it into anything. Never give up, work hard, and always persevere. Don’t ever let anyone tell you that are not enough. You don’t need that negativity in your life. I want you to remember that I think you are enough. You are smart, loving, and kind and are going to grow up to be an amazing person. Don’t ever forget that! And if for some reason you do forget, come back and see me and I will try to help you remember.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life and I believe that you are going to become a truly phenomenal person.

And one more time so you don’t forget, you are enough.

Mrs. Fowler

To all of my teacher friends, and all of the other teachers in the world, I wish you all an amazing school year. I hope that you and your students grow in more ways than you ever thought possible. With the right encouragement, we really can mold these little minds to change the world and that is truly amazing!

She Leaves a Little Sparkle Wherever She Goes

When the new year starts, I don’t know about you but I have all of these big plans. Big plans to wake up earlier, eat healthier, exercise more and put myself on a better schedule. Well here we are on day 23 of the new year and I have already had 5 cheat meals, only exercised twice and have only written one blog. So much for resolutions.

But as I sit here and type all of this out I can’t help but ask myself, “What is the point of a resolution?” I mean seriously? What is it about a New Year that makes people want to change who they are and the choices they make? Most importantly, why do you need a New Year to make those changes?

Last year, I made a decision to lose weight. It didn’t come because of the New Year. It came because I was tired of looking at myself in the mirror. It came because I was upset at the weight I had allowed myself to put on. It came because I was ready to make a better life choice. For me, it was not a resolution. It was a lifestyle change that just happened to start in the month of January.

What I think that we all need to realize is that we don’t need a New Year to make better life choices. We just need motivation, determination and a want to be better. Whether it is the month of January or October, any time of the year is a good choice to be a better you. For me, it was something that I wanted for myself and only for myself. I didn’t let anyone else influence my decision and I put in the time and effort to make the changes that I wanted a reality. It was not a quick over night fix. It was hard work and persistence that paid off.

I am writing this to challenge you to make a life style change this year. Not a resolution that you will break in two weeks, but a choice to be a better version of yourself. I feel like if you are making a change to fit with your life style, then their is room to customize it to fit your needs. A resolution is so absolute. Do this. Give up this. Don’t do this. A life style change, however, is more along the lines of, “What kind of choices can I make to make sure this change is successful in my own life?” For me, I knew that I could not give up wine or coffee. Because of this I made the sacrifice to give up something that I could live without. I also knew that I would hardly exercise so I started doing little things like parking further from the door, doing small exercises before bed or taking a walk around my neighborhood. And these choices worked for me!

Bottom line, while I do have hopes and goals for the year, just like last year, what I really want is to make better choices for a better me. I want to sparkle in whatever I do.

Make it a point this year to make a life style change instead of trying to keep up with a resolution. I promise that you will be much more successful, and much happier, with a change tailored to fit your life. Changes are not one size fits all. They have to be molded into what works for you. I encourage you to be the best version of yourself and leave a little sparkle wherever you go. Let me know if you have any questions in the comments below! I always love hearing from you!

Expanding my Horizons: Taking a Leap into the Field of Styling

In the world of blogging, you are usually the one in front of the camera. I am constantly making sure that I am picture perfect and ready to make sure that the camera captures the best image. But what happens when you step behind the scenes? What happens when you take a step back and start styling someone else? This past summer, I expanded my horizons to find out.

Brooke Roberts-1034

The entire world of blogging has always intrigued me. I love the crisp, clean images. I love finding just the perfect words to go with your pictures. I love gathering inspiration from others around me. It is something that I truly enjoy having in my life. Since I enjoy each aspect so much, I decided to take on a different role. Instead of being the one in front of the camera, I decided to take a step behind the scenes and dabble into the world of styling.

My best friend Mary Elaine, of It’s Mary Elaine, launched her blog this summer. Before she could officially set it live on the internet, she needed good, high quality images of herself to build her image. Knowing that I already had experience in this field, she reached out to me to help her put outfits together and assist on the day of her photo shoot.

I met up with her a few days before the shoot to pick out outfits. We met up at one of our favorite, local boutiques, RMC, to put together and borrow a few outfits. She explained the vision that she was hoping for in her pictures so that I would get an idea for outfits. She also shared her mood board on Pinterest with me so I would have a few visuals. We put together 5 different outfits to shoot.

With the outfits in place, I was able to gather accessories, shoes and props to add to her photographs. I got lucky in the fact that Mary Elaine and I are the same size in shoes. Normally, a stylist would have to borrow or buy the shoes for a shoot, but since she was my size, and I have an extensive collection, I was able to pull from my own closet.

Our photographer was the fabulous Brooke Roberts of Brooke Roberts Photo. She had great vision, amazing ideas and just a good eye for capturing the perfect shot. During the shoot, I assisted Brooke with props, adjusting Mary Elaine’s clothes, and fixing stray hairs. It was a great experience to see her work and the images that she captured were stunning. I absolutely loved the experience. It was amazing to see someone value my opinion. When I saw the finished product it was such an awesome feeling to see little details that I suggested being captured in the photo. I was so thankful for the opportunity and I will defitely be styling more in the future.

If you are in need of a wardrobe stylist, please don’t hesitate to let me know. I have worked a few other photo shoots since Mary Elaine’s and they have all been a great experience with amazing results. I am also available to style outfits for events, closet makeovers and personal shopping. Whatever your styling needs, I am happy to help!

A Southern Girls Dream: A Peek Inside of Draper James

This summer, I had the privilege of visiting Draper James in Nashville, TN and let me tell you… it was a Southern Girls dream!

The store itself oozes Southern Hospitality and the girls that work there are as sweet at the tea that they offer you as soon as you walk through the door. I probably wandered around the store, sipping my tea, for a good 15 minutes before I ever really started shopping. I just wanted to take in every aspect of the store. You can tell that so much thought went into this entire brand. Every little detail is perfectly placed or arranged in such a way that you can’t help but me mesmerized. It was like flipping through an issue of Southern Living magazine. You wanted it all!

I love that Reese Witherspoon plays such a huge part in the development of her brand. You can tell that she really has a hand in every little detail. Here Southern roots are continually present throughout the store and she is frequently spotted wearing the brand out and about. I had heard that she often visits the Nashville store and was hoping that she would be in the store on my visit. She, unfortunately, was not but maybe that was a good thing. My husband said that he didn’t know if he could handle both of our personalities in the same room! He had a feeling that we would have both gotten loud and giggly!

I knew that I wanted to purchase a few things to take home with me and implement into my wardrobe. At the top of my wish list was the “Totes Y’all” tote. I really feel like this piece has become an iconic staple of the brand and I knew that I would be able to use it with so much in my own wardrobe. I also loved the “What Would Dolly Do?” tote and the “Hello Sugar” tote! I highly recommend that you consider purchasing one of these totes. Any of these totes would be a great addition to your existing handbag collection. They have plenty of space, hold their shape well, and are perfect for a day of shopping or picnic at the park!

I also wanted to purchase a piece of the clothing but, I wanted to make sure that it was a piece that I would be able to get the most use from. While I absolutely love the dresses and sweaters, I knew that those were not going to be the best for my wardrobe. Instead I chose the Stripe Cloister Top. It was a great neutral that I would be able to wear almost year round, especially with out South Georgia temperatures, and it could easily be dressed up or down. It fit great and has quickly become one of my favorite pieces in my closet! Want a sneak peek of a future blog post featuring the shirt and the tote? Just scroll down to the bottom!

While these pictures showcase their spring/summer collection the fall collection is just as cute and I already have my eye on a few pieces! Want to check out what I am eyeing to add to my fall wardrobe? Just click on the links below!

Finding Your Balance

Just like it is essential to find a balance in your fashion choices, I have found that it is crucial to find a balance in your life. I may seem constantly busy but it works for me. After a few years, I have found a perfect balance of work and play that works for me and my family.

Just like mixing a basic tee with a leather skirt is all about balance, life must also be a balance of work and play. Growing up, I really struggled with finding a good balance. I either did nothing but work and study, leaving me burnt out quickly, or I only played. It wasn’t until I found an outlet in blogging that I really started to get a handle on all areas of my life. I think blogging helped because it was something that I enjoyed that also required a sense of discipline. While it is an outlet, I have dreams for my little blog and do want it to be successful. This means that I need to be constantly gathering material, taking photos, and pushing out posts. If I am not willing to put in any effort, then I can’t expect to be successful. With the motivation to have time for blogging, I make sure that my work is done and that I have taken care of my responsibilities.

With that balance, I have to say that my family is, and always will be, my first priority. There have been many days when a stack of papers really needed to be graded but I let it wait until after dinner with my husband. There have been other days when I really needed to get a blog post posted but I put it off so that I could watch Peppa Pig with my daughter. It is this balance that keeps me sane. I realized that allowing myself time to just take a break from responsibilities, even if only for a minute, helps to keep me sane.

With blogging, especially, if it starts to feel like work, then you probably shouldn’t be doing it anymore. Throughout my blogging career, I have taken frequent breaks, just so I don’t feel overwhelmed. Stressing out about getting a post on the blog or an outfit photographed, takes away the joy that I get from writing. I think that what is most important is that I am presenting who I am as a person. Being real and honest with my followers is more important than making sure that I have at least two new posts every week. Life happens, balance is necessary, and, sometimes, we all just need a break.

If I have taken anything at all away from my journey through social media it would be that being true to who you are is the most important thing. When you realize that being real is way more important than portraying a more glamorous life, the stress melts away, priorities stay balanced, and you just have fun. I will never let myself get to the point where I no longer enjoy blogging. What would be the point? A hobby should only be a hobby and nothing more.

With anything in life, find your balance and make it work for you. It may not look like someone else’s balance but if it works for you, that is all that matters!

Color Pops and Street Style

I love a good white top, especially if it has some great detail. It looks so fresh, clean and crisp and will literally pair with anything. Sometimes though, you just need a pop of color to bring some life to the white.

This adorable tank is from Francesca’s and I love the lace detail. It really adds some character to an otherwise basic top. Best part about it? I got it on sale for less than $10! Now is really the top to shop stores like these because they have deeply discounted their Spring and Summer styles to make room for all the Fall fashions. Little boutiques and smaller chains only have so much room for their product so they have to clean out their current inventory to stay current with the seasons. And how do they do that? Great sales! You can look through the sales racks to find pieces for next year or great basics, like my top, that can easily be used in the cooler months by adding a cardigan or blazer.

For my jeans, I went with the always stylish flare leg. I feel like this cut of jeans is very flattering. It really elongates the legs and has a slimming effect on the lower half of your body. I guess the flare helps to balance out my Mom hips, lol! But I earned those hips and would not trade my precious daughter for life without them! Besides, curves are sexy!

My accessories really brought it the pops of color to bring some life to the outfit. My necklace is from Belk and is by the by the brand Towne and Reese. It is a few years old but I will link something similar below! My clutch is made by a sweet friend from Instagram, Kayla (kayrae33). She sells them on her Etsy shop, The Professional Prep, and even though she is currently sold out, she updates her shop whenever possible. Make sure that you are following her on Instagram so you know when she updates the shop! And stay tuned, because I am hosting a fun giveaway later this month and will be giving one, and lots of other goodies, away to one lucky subscriber!

My shoes are a peep toe bootie style that snaps on in the back. They were a TJ Maxx find from two years ago and I still love them! Considering that I was able to score them for less than $15, I would say that I definitely have gotten my monies worth out of them! They are a great color that literally goes with everything and they are actually really comfortable. I am able to wear them an entire 8 hours teaching with little to no problems!

When the weather cools off a bit I will try to update this look and show you just how versatile your Summer pieces can be in the Fall! Let me know if that is something that you would be interested in reading by commenting below! I always love to hear from you!

Being Basic and Mom Fluff

There is just something so classic about a t-shirt dress and a good denim jacket. It may just be one of the easiest outfits to throw together and the result is timeless. I have never seen a bad combination of these two together and everyone that I have ever seen wear  that outfit looks great.

For my t-shirt and denim jacket combo, I went with two great pieces from Target. Both of these are a few years old but I have literally seen something similar every season. While you may not be able to get the exact stud detail as pictured on my jacket, I am almost positive that you can get something very close. Heck! I will even link one for you at the bottom! As for the stripe dress, well stripes are just about as American as Apple Pie! I love that these stripes are thinner. They don’t make me look as wide which is great for this new Mommy who is still struggling to lose her baby weight!

And speaking of baby weight… let’s be real here for a minute…

I almost didn’t even post these pictures. When I looked at them the only thing that I was able to focus on was the extra “Mom Fluff” around my middle. Losing weight after baby has been something that I have struggled with for a few months now. I am very self-conscience of my midsection, especially since my daughter is almost a year old. Clothes just don’t fit like they use to and I have had to go up in sizes in a few things…

But here’s the thing… I did just have a baby! It took me ten months to put on all that weight so it will take me at least ten months to lose it! I am not some Hollywood actress who can afford a personal trainer and a nanny. I am a real, sleep deprived Mom who works two jobs and tutors. I cook, clean, take care of my family and still somehow find time to write a few blog posts. These pictures make me proud of the woman who I have become and that “Mom Fluff” is the armor of the super woman that I truly am!

So now that I have gotten out my “I am woman, hear me roar” speech, I direct you back to your regularly scheduled outfit review…

For my jewelry, I went with this bold, yellow Kendra Scott Rayne necklace. While this specific color is not available online, you can build it at your local store using the Color Bar or you can build it online with the same tool! My handbag was actually a DIY!  Want to make one of your own? Just check out my blog post where I show you step-by-step how to make one! It was so easy! My sunnies are by Foster Grant and they are a beautiful rose color. I actually saw them at my local CVS when I was picking up a prescription and just fell in love with them!

My sandals are by Naughty Monkey and I got them on super sale last Summer from Belk. They are so colorful and go with so much! I got the idea to wear my yellow Rayne necklace by matching it to the yellow color in the shoe. They are also super comfortable, which is great for an afternoon of walking around Downtown Savannah.

This will definitely be a look that I recreate again. It can easily transition to the Fall or Winter by adding boots or leggings. That is what makes these pieces so timeless and classic. You can literally wear them year round!

Oh! And in case you were wondering… I am drinking a Venti Iced Soy Chai with Vanilla! One of my faves! I can’t wait to get it with Pumpkin Spice this Fall!
