Dating my Spouse and Dressing up with Goodwill

When you become a parent, it is really easy to forget that you were first a spouse.

Since having Vivi, our already full plates have been overflowing. It is so easy to get overwhelmed and, unfortunately, it is usually Date Night that gets cut from our agenda for the week. We still go out for dinner but, at the end of the day, it is just easier to take Vivi with us than it is to get a babysitter or drop her off with her grandparents.

As Vivi gets older, she is starting to pick up on more things. She repeats things that have been said, copies mannerisms, and exhibits some of the same mannerisms and me and her father. I really want her to have good role models in her life and what better place than to have that then in our own home. Having a healthy, loving relationship with her father will show her what a good relationship should look like. It will show her what to look for in a spouse and what to aspire to have in a relationship. It is because of all of this that I realized that now, more than ever, I need to make time to date her Daddy.

Our relationship has by no means been easy. It seems like everything has been a whirlwind. Dating, becoming engaged and getting married happened within the span of a year. We were in love and ready to get our lives started but that didn’t make the things we were facing as a couple any easier. As if all of that wasn’t a whirlwind, we found out we were pregnant with Vivi just two months after having gotten married. While we love her more than we can ever express, we were not planning on having children that soon. I really feel like we didn’t give ourselves the chance, as a couple, to grow and mature. It is because of this that I feel that it has become natural for us to not make date night a priority. But all of that changes today.

Before I was ever Vivi’s Mommy, I was Justin’s wife. As much as it pains me to think about it, Vivi will grow up and start a family of her own one day and it will just be me and Justin. If we don’t build a firm foundation in our relationship now, it will only be natural for us to have more problems in the future. The last thing I want is a crumbling foundation in our future relationship so I am making the changes necessary to ensure that does not happen.

Justin and I actually have a date night planned for this weekend and it will be the first one we have been on in over 6 months! Can you believe that? I am excited to be dating my husband and I am going to make it a priority in our lives. He deserves my time and attention just as much as my daughter and, as his wife, I am going to do whatever I can to ensure that our marriage is successful.

Since I am going to be having a lot of Date Night’s in my future, I will definitely need to look my best. Lucky for me, my local Goodwill is right around the corner! Since people are constantly bringing in items and donating to Goodwill, you never know what you are going to find. There is literally something new every day! On our last visit, my husband and I took the time to pick out something to wear for one another. My husband picked out this adorable dress for me and I picked out a great button down for him. Both of the items that we picked our were name brand and usually sell for significantly more than the price we paid. My husbands shirt is from J. Crew and they usually sell for about $60. We paid less than $5! My dress is by the brand Karlie. These dresses usually retail for around $90 and we paid less than $6!

With all of the money that we saved on our clothes, we can have dinner, a movie, and go out for dessert!

Oh! You Look Like a Teacher!

One of my biggest pet peeves is when I tell people that I am a teacher and they respond with the comment, “You look like a teacher!”

Seriously?! What does a teacher even look like??

I have noticed recently that I very much have two wardrobes. I have my clothes that I wear to work and my clothes that I wear on the weekend. This past summer I really worked to clean out my closet of things that I no longer wore or really were not my style. I found myself holding on to clothes just for the simple fact of I could wear them to work. I realized that it was time to make some changes for a more universal wardrobe. I wanted my clothes to reflect who I was but I also wanted them to be appropriate to work.

So I started cleaning out, I mean really cleaning out. I would go through my closet again and again, getting rid of things that were too big, too worn and just simply not me anymore. I got rid a lot. If felt great to just get rid of things. The pile of hangers that amassed was almost inspiring. It encouraged to keep on pulling things out, really cutting back and focusing on things that spoke to who I was as a person.

I created a group on Facebook and carefully posted each piece of clothing. I sold it to Friends and Family at a steal and then used that money to update my new wardrobe with some fun pieces. I really tried to focus on pieces that were transitional through the seasons and that could easily be worn during the school year or on the weekends.

The results have been amazing. I love going into my closet and being genuinely happy with everything that I see. I love knowing that I can easily grab something out of my closet and  have it be ok to wear to work. I love that my wardrobe is no longer defined by my profession, but by who I am as a person.

I encourage you all to take the time and really discover your style and what makes you happy. Then, with that new-found knowledge, go through and clean out anything that doesn’t fit with that style. The results are free and, honestly, helps to make my life just a little less stressful.

Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions about finding and focusing your style. I always love hearing from you and would love to be able to help you build your wardrobe! Also, if you are interested in shopping my closet page, check it out here! I am happy to ship and the prices are super cheap!

Maxed Out

Y’all! The first week of school is no joke! I am simply maxed out!

As a teacher, it is always hard to find a good balance at the beginning of the school year. You want to stay late and get things done around your classroom but you are also so exhausted you can’t wait to get home and crash. When you factor into the equation that I am also a wife and a mother, it makes it even more exhausting to balance all of my responsibilities. Staying at the school until almost six has me staying awake until almost midnight, and then the cycle starts all over again the next day. If I could sleep for a week I would definitely not complain. At the end of the day, I realize that I am sacrificing my needs to meet the needs of my family and my students and that cycle simply cannot continue.

Alas, though, there is simply no time for me to sleep for a week so, instead, I have been making other little changes in my life to make sure that I take care of myself. I realized that if I continue to neglect myself, I will eventually be no good to the people around me. It is never wrong to make yourself a priority and the older that I get, the more that I realize that self-care is crucial for ensuring that I am the best version of myself. When I take a few extra moments to take care of myself, I am happier, healthier and just more successful at the tasks that I try to accomplish.

One of the things that I have done is to completely change my diet to become a Vegan. After doing a little research and talking with friends, I made the choice to cut animal meat and animal products from my diet. While it was not easy, I have never felt better in my life. My skin is clearer, my hair is healthier and I have little to no problems with my migraines. As a Vegan, I have found many yummy vegetable and grain recipes that have definitely made the process easier. I don’t feel like I am missing out on the foods that I used to eat and my family has been more than accommodating with this lifestyle change.

Since I changed my diet I have seen an increase in energy. I thought that it might be beneficial to put that extra energy towards self-care. For the past few weeks I have been attending hot yoga at The HUB in Savannah and it has quickly become my favorite day of the week. Currently I have only been attending the Candlelight Community Yoga Class once a week but, after the chaos of back-to-school slows downs, I hope to add more classes to my week. Yoga has done for my mind what becoming a Vegan has done for my diet. I think clearer, notice a decrease in my stress level and just generally have a better outlook on life.  If you are local to Savannah, I highly encourage that you check out one of the Candlelight Community Yoga Classes. They are every Thursday at 8pm and all proceeds from the class are donated to a local charity.

Even though I am tired in the mornings, I also realized that I am a more pleasant person if I take the time to put on makeup, fix my hair, and put on an outfit that I truly love. Since school has started back, I have made a point to wake up early enough to make sure that I have time to do these things. In the past, whenever I had to go to work with no-makeup or un-fixed hair, I was only able to focus on the fact that I looked “unkempt.” While at work, I really should be focused on my students and the curriculum that I am expected to teach. Taking a few minutes at the beginning of the day for myself, ensures that I am the best version of myself for my students and that makes for a very successful day.

Along with taking time for myself in the mornings, I have also implemented a great skin care routine. If you follow me Instagram, you are probably aware that I sell LipSense. LipSense is a part of the SeneGence Corporation and within that business, we also have an amazing line of skincare. After using the products for a few months, I have noticed that my skin looks more youthful, bright and clearer. I love the fact that even if I am not wearing make-up, I am going to look great. If you are interested in trying out any of these skincare products, check me out on my Facebook Group, Kiss and Makeup with Megan Fowler. I would be happy to answer any questions that you may have about the products.

If you do not do so already, I strongly encourage you to start making time for yourself. Take a yoga class, make a home cooked meal or even just get a pedicure. When you make yourself a priority, you are putting the best version of yourself out for the world to see. You will feel better, look better, smile more and just be a generally more pleasant person. And I don’t know about you, but my husband, daughter and students enjoy pleasant Megan way more than “maxed-out” Megan! Take care of yourselves friends!

Red, White and Busy

As a teacher, I always have these great plans about everything that I am going to get done during the summer. I have a list of things I want to do around the house, DIYs I want to tackle, trips I want to take, people I want to visit… I mean the list could go on and on.

One of the things that I always have good intentions on trying to be successful with is my blog. I have big plans of blogging multiple times during the week, building a stockpile of material for the busy school year and reaching out for potential collaborations. I usually start the summer with a bang, but then life happens.

As a Mother of a very busy toddler, I am constantly on the go. Play dates, playing at the park, shopping or just chasing her around the house, it seems like we never stop. I swear she can make a mess faster than I can clean it up! With all of this crammed into just a few hours during the day, when I do finally get the chance to sit down and relax, I crash! In fact, I can’t even tell you the last time I opened my computer. To be honest with you, I am typing out this blog post on my phone!

As I sit back, though, and contemplate our very busy lives, I really don’t have regret over a slight neglect to my blog. I am living my life and living it to the fullest. At the end of the day, making memories with my daughter is way more important that 300-500 words on a page. What I would regret is missing out on couch cuddles, sticky hugs and a that sweet little voice calling out “Mommy!”

In the grand scheme of things, I have accomplished a lot this summer! I redecorated my living room, bathroom and bedroom, painted stripes on my bedroom wall, reach out for multiple collabs, went on one vacation and currently packing for the second and had lots of day dates with all of my besties! The best part? Summer is even quite over yet! I still have one more vacation, a few fun collabs, a cute DIY and more in the works before I even have to return to school! I feel accomplished!

I constantly have to remind myself that it is ok to take a breather and that no one expects me to do it all. While it would be incredibly awesome to be a super hero, I am not Wonder Woman! I have to prioritize, I have to take breaks and, most importantly, I have to put my family first!

This 4th of July, I hope you are doing just that, putting family first! Whether it is your biological family or the family you chose for yourself,  I hope you are having a safe and happy holiday! Relax! Have a drink! It’s ok to take a break from the busyness of life!

Looking Great on a Budget

One of my favorite things to do is put together outfits on a budget. I used to love watching The Look for Less on the Style Network so I try to recreate this idea in my own outfits. It is such a fun way to revamp and restyle and really get a new look without breaking the bank.

My first tip would be to simply find a good deal. This adorable floral blouse was the start of my outfit and was a steal at my local H&M. It has so many gorgeous colors so it will literally go with anything. I knew it was going to be a perfect piece to start with and build a fun outfit. Places like H&M, Forever 21, TJ Maxx and Marshalls have amazing prices year round! No sales necessary! They are a great place to shop for fun, trendy pieces. You will be easily be able to add the latest trends to your wardrobe for a fraction of the cost.

My next tip is to shop your own closet. For my bottoms, I pulled the rich green out of my blouse and went with these flattering skinnies. The best part about these pants? They were buried in my closet and still had the tags attached! I think they had been in their quite a few months and I forgot about them! I am notorious for buying items, hanging them up and forgetting about them. If you are like me and get the itch to go shopping quite often, just go look through your closet. If it has tags still, it is just like shopping!!

My third tip is to shop your local Goodwill. To pull my look together, and give it a more polished finish, I threw on this lightweight, khaki blazer from my local Goodwill. I recently wrote a blog post about shopping at Goodwill and my favorite thing to shop for is, hands down, blazers. You can get a great piece for about a tenth of the cost! I encourage you to read that post when you have them time. Once you have read my tips, set aside some time to go explore and see what you can find. Remember to try everything on because you don’t know how it will fit! With just a little luck, you will be able to update your wardrobe without breaking the bank!

My final tip is to maximize your budget with accessories. You would be surprised just how much a different necklace can change your outfit. While the necklace that I chose for this outfit is a little more expensive, I could have easily added a statement necklace from Forever 21, a layer of vintage pearls from Grandmother’s jewelry box or a delicate chain from Stella & Dot to completely change my look. Accessories are usually less expensive than clothing items so you can have a large selection to really give more options to your closet. One of my favorite places to shop for accessories is small, online boutiques. I have found so many fun, unique pieces for a fraction of the price, and I love knowing that money is going to support a family instead of a big business. Some of my favorite online boutiques are Purple Peridot, Le Boutique Shop, Knitted Belle Boutique, Julia Marie and Harper & Jewels. Be sure to check out the Let’s Stay Connected page of my blog because I have coupon codes for many of the boutiques that I listed!

I hope these tips will help you update your wardrobe without breaking the bank. If you have any tips of your own, let me know in the comments below. I always love to hear from you! I wish you all the best of luck on your budget shopping adventures. I know you will all find fabulous pieces for your wardrobe!

A Partnership that Matters: Making a Difference with Goodwill Southeast Georgia

I recently had the great honor of teaming up with Goodwill Southeast Georgia for Goodwill Industries Week. This is an annual event that encourages people to shop at their local Goodwill and brings awareness to all of the great work that Goodwill does for our local communities. One of the biggest ways that that are able to fund their programs is through donations from people like me and you. Those donations, mainly clothes, are sorted and then sold and various Goodwill retail locations. The profits are used to fund programs like the Senior Community Service Employment Program, Pathways out of Poverty Program and GCF Learn Free, among many others.

To help bring more awareness to Goodwill, I was asked to style the gorgeous Renee LaSalle from WSAV’s show The Bridge. Every day during Goodwill Industries Week, Renee wore a different outfit with pieces that were found at our local Goodwill. Tops, skirts, dresses, jewelry, belts and even a fabulous pair of shoes all made the cut, and did not break the bank! I was also asked to appear on The Bridge with Renee to help kick off Goodwill Week and talk about all of the fun that we had putting together her outfits. Here are the amazing outfits that I helped her put together:

Goodwill Finds: Dress, Belt and Shoes

Goodwill Finds: Blouse and Skirt

Goodwill Finds: Blouse, Tank and Skirt

Goodwill Finds: Dress and Belt

Goodwill Finds: Blouse, Skirt, Necklace and Bracelets

It was such an amazing experience and I loved how each of the outfits turned out! Renee looked fabulous and was such a sweetheart!

I also helped out by arranging a Kendra Gives Back Party to benefit Goodwill Southeast Georgia. I love any excuse to team up with Kendra Scott and this event was no exception.

It was so nice to meet everyone that I have gotten to know through Goodwill and to raise money for such a good cause. Plus, adding new Kendra Scott pretties to me closet is always a bonus!

I hope that you enjoyed all of the outfits that I helped to put together and that it inspires you to go searching for something for yourself. When you shop at Goodwill you are helping to change someone’s life and your money is going to help our community in so many ways! And if that’s not enough, the prices are Goodwill are unbeatable!  You can update your entire wardrobe without breaking the bank!

Lots of Layers

I don’t know about your weather, but the weather in Savannah has been crazy. One day it is almost 80 degrees and the next it is has dropped below 30. Some days, there is even a difference of 40 degrees in one day! How do you even dress for that? Luckily, I have learned to layer like a pro so I am comfortable all day long.

This look was perfect for a day out exploring out beautiful city. No matter how they weather changed during the day, I was able to add or remove layers to stay comfortable. I started with the cutest LuLaRoe Carly dress. Instead of wearing it as a dress I knotted it on the side so it could be worn as a tunic. The Carly is a super versatile dress and can be worn so many ways. I have worn mine as a dress, with leggings and knotted. Recently I saw a video on how to fold it and tie to be worn as a wrap dress and I cannot wait to try that look. Since I was wearing the Carly as a tunic I paired it with my favorite pairs of black skinny jeans. One of my favorite places to buy skinny jeans is Old Navy. They are already at a great price point but they are also usually on sale and they  even have coupons!

For some added warmth, I threw on one of my favorite cardigans. It is also from Old Navy and it is literally perfect. It is is oversized, has the cutest details and is a great, neutral color. I have had it forever but I will link something similar below. My shoes are fabulous and are from JustFab. They are leopard espadrilles with stud detail around the ankle. They are the reason that I decided to join. If you are not familiar, JustFab is a monthly shoe subscription. For just $39.99 a month, you can get a new pair of shoes or save your credit until something you like better comes along. They are constantly getting new styles and they also have handbags and clothes that you can choose to purchase instead of shoes. What I like best is that if new shoes are just not in your budget that month, you can choose to skip the month and will not be charged! Just don’t forget to skip! I have gotten some seriously cute shoes at a great price so you should definitely consider checking them out!

I kept the rest of my accessories simple so that the bold color of my dress remained the star. I went with a basic cognac colored clutch, a fun hat and some of my favorite Kendra Scott jewelry. I use to be one of those people that felt like I couldn’t wear hats but I really believe that it is about finding the right hat for you. I searched for months for the perfect hat to fit the shape of my head and lucked up with this brown beauty from Target. It perfectly fits with my boho style and matches with so much in my wardrobe. I can easily wear it year round so I really get a lot of use out of this piece. As I mentioned, my necklace and ring are from Kendra Scott. I absolutely love this brand and everything that Kendra does to give back. If you are lucky enough to have a Kendra Scott store in your area then you can be sure that they are constantly giving back to you community. I never feel bad when I make a purchase with them because I know that much of the profits are going to benefit something great.

Remember that many of the pieces in your closet are versatile year round as long as you know how to layer them. Play with different layers or add a knot, just learn what works for you and the climate in which you live. Making your pieces more versatile is the key to simplifying your wardrobe. While I do love clothes, and probably shop way more than I should, I really try to think about the versatility of piece before I purchase. It needs to be able to be worn multiple ways, must work in multiple seasons and needs to be able to match multiple outfits. If I follow those rules when shopping, I know that I am getting something of quality for my wardrobe that will definitely be worn and be put to good use! Let me know if you have any questions or if you want to share your favorite way to layer. I always love to hear from you!
