Where Did the Summer Go?

Y’all!! Is it just me or was this like the shortest summer ever??

Brooke Roberts-1097

Tomorrow is the first day of school and I feel like I just was released for the summer. While I am excited to see all of my new students, I don’t think I am quite ready to return to the daily grind. Between vacations, projects around the house and just spending time with my family, I feel like we were constantly busy. I think that is a lot of the reason why the summer seemed to go so fast.

As I watch my daughter grow now, more than ever, I want time to just slow down. She is getting bigger every day and gaining so much independence. I love to watch her little wheels spinning as she tries to figure out a problem. It really makes me more aware of the image that I am portraying to her.

I hope that I am someone that she aspires to be like.

I hope that I am someone she admires.

I hope that I am someone she is proud to call her Mom.

All of this makes me want to just take a step back and just enjoy life in the moment. We are only promised today so why not make the best of every possible situation. While I do wish that I was still home with Vivi enjoying my summer vacation, I am going to make the time that we do have together special. It is so easy to get caught up in the business of life that we are not really out living our lives.

The laundry can wait for another day. Instead I am going to get outside and watch my daughter play. I don’t want to have any regrets and I don’t want to miss out on any moments. I may be going back to work but I am going to put forth an effort to really be present with my family. No matter what your job is, your family should be your main focus. If you always put them first and enjoy every minute, when next summer rolls around, maybe it won’t seem to have flown by so fast.

A Sweet Body Image

If you follow me on Instagram, you know that over the last few months I have done some major dieting. Eating a diet that is predominately Vegan, Gluten Free and Refined Sugar Free, as well as taking the Trip-Plex combo from Plexus, has helped me to lose almost 30 pounds. While I am currently working on a major blog post about my diet and weight loss routine, complete with my favorite recipes, I wanted to take the time to talk about a positive body image. I “donut” know about you, but I firmly believe that this is the most important beginnings of any diet or weight loss routine.

For a good part of my life I was super skinny. Wearing around a size zero and barely tipping the scale at 110 pounds left my 5’7″ frame looking very small. After high school, depending on what was happening in my life, my weight would fluctuate, but at any given time I was never bigger than a size 8. Honestly though, I wasn’t happy. Even at my skinniest I didn’t truly love myself and was constantly comparing myself to other people. After having Vivi, I didn’t immediately bounce back. Even though I was breast feeding, the weight was not falling off. Not only this, but I was eating more to keep up with the demands of breast feeding and that had me packing on pounds. I tried various diets and even started taking Plexus, but I was never really serious about what I was doing. I never committed 100%. Not only that, but I wasn’t really dieting for the right reasons. I cared more about a number on a scale or the size of my pants than I did about how I felt. I was too busy comparing myself to a model in a magazine to see that I was beautiful and who I was as a person was worthy of self-love. Perhaps the worst thing, though, was that I was in no way portraying an image to my daughter of what a positive body image looked like. Changes needed to be made.

I think that a big reason that I was not 100% committed is because I was not happy with who I was or where I was in my life. Don’t get me wrong. I knew I had a lot to be grateful for… a supportive family, a sweet husband,  an energetic daughter. I was blessed. But, I wasn’t happy with myself. I didn’t understand what it meant to love yourself. I truly believe that in order for a diet to work, and for you to be committed to a diet, you have to be happy with yourself. You have to love who you are as a person on the inside to be willing to make the necessary changes on your outward appearance. That self-love helps you to realize that a weight loss journey is a journey to be healthy, not a journey to achieve an impossible image. After joining a local group called Savannah Influencers and meeting an amazing group of girl bosses, I finally learned how to love myself. In January of this year I tipped the scale at 180 pounds and had to buy a pair of size 12 jeans. I was the largest that I had ever been in my life and knew that something had to change.

How I was eating and what I was putting into my body was not showing myself any form of love. I knew that something had to be done. I wanted who I was on the inside to reflect on the outside. Not only that, but I wanted to take care of my body. By nourishing it from the inside out I was showing self-love and that was the best thing that I could do for myself. My body is a temple, perfectly chosen for me by my Father in heaven. I should want it to be in the best shape possible. I began a very strict diet and Plexus routine to nourish my body from the inside. I honestly believe that the only reason that I have been so successful is because I truly do love the person that I am. I wanted to be healthy because I loved my body and with that, the weight loss came naturally. At 31 years old, I have never been prouder of who I am. I have worked hard to achieve everything that I have in my life and am so grateful for each and every opportunity. Because I achieved my positive inner body image early on in my journey, I am able to appreciate the loss of each and every pound even more.

So many people have asked me for my weight loss routine but I feel like this step in the journey is so much more important than actually the losing of the weight. If you are really wanting to lose weight I truly believe that you need to be able to look inside yourself and be happy with who you are as a person. That doesn’t mean that you are happy with the weight, or that you even believe that weight loss isn’t necessary. It means that you truly do love yourself and love the life that you are living. It is about coming to a point in your life where you want better for yourself because you believe that you deserve better.  That is the number one reason that I think I have been so successful. Having reached a point that I truly did love myself, I was able to make my diet a normal part of my everyday routine and enjoy each and every part of the process. I wanted to be healthy and prolong this life that I now loved so much even more. I love meal planning! I love working out before bed! Most importantly though, I still love myself!

While I am super happy with the results that I have achieved so far, I am not quite at the weight and size that I hope to achieve.  When I look in the mirror though, I am happy. I know that I am healthy and in the best shape of my life. I am portraying a healthy body image for my daughter and setting a positive example. I am showing her that it is not about the number on a scale, but about self-love and being healthy. I love myself and am so proud of how far that I have come. I will continue to keep pressing on until my desired results are achieved but, most importantly, I will continue to keep loving myself and who I am as a person. Nourishing my body from the inside out is the purest form of self-love. That love is the epitome of true beauty and reflects to the outside. It has helped me out so much on this journey and made me an even stronger person. I encourage each and every one of you to look inside yourself and start to love the person that you have become. That is the beginning of any journey and is a truly beautiful process.

Stay tuned because my weight loss routine is coming soon! Just make sure that you have completed this step in your journey before you begin! I love you all and think that each and every one of you is beautiful!

Pretty in Pink

Warmer temps mean brighter colors, so excuse me while I wear all the pink!

I have always been a girlie-girl, so it is probably no surprise that my favorite color is pink. It is so bright and vibrant and I feel like it brings life to any outfit. Recently I went shopping at H&M and they had so many cute off the shoulder and cold shoulder tops. Best part? They were all less than $20! This gorgeous pink gingham beauty was one of my purchases and I am in love. Besides the great print, it has the cutest tie detail on the sleeves.

I am loving that white denim is so on trend for this Spring. It has always been one of my favorite things to wear year round. It is such a versatile item in my closet and can literally be worn in multiple ways. This pair was purchased on clearance from American Eagle. It has great destroyed detail and an unfinished hem line. I purchased them off season so I got a great deal on them, like less than $20! I definitely recommend searching the clearance racks, especially for out of season items. For me, white pants will always be season, but other items I have found are perfect for jump starting my wardrobe for other seasons.

I went with bright colors for my accessories and I love the vibrancy that it adds to my outfit. My clutch has been a frequent visitor on my blog and was handmade by my sweet friend Kayla of The Professional Prep Blog. I will tag some similar style below if you want one of your own.  My necklace is from Purple Peridot and to say that I am obsessed would be an understatement. If you follow me on Instagram, you have probably seen this version, as well as the white version, on many of my outfits. It makes such a great statement and really completes any outfit. When I am not sure what to wear, I always throw on one of these necklaces. It is also available in a turquoise color! Try not to buy all three! It will be hard to resist!

My shoes are the must have wedges of the season, and while I would have loved to own the Marc Fischer originals, these are an amazing dupe for less than half the price. I chose the cognac color but they also come in black and a sand color. Besides being super cute, they are extremely comfortable. They are a great color and will easily be worn all season long with so many of my outfits.

What are you excited to wear this Spring? I always love to hear from you!

Being Basic and Mom Fluff

There is just something so classic about a t-shirt dress and a good denim jacket. It may just be one of the easiest outfits to throw together and the result is timeless. I have never seen a bad combination of these two together and everyone that I have ever seen wear  that outfit looks great.

For my t-shirt and denim jacket combo, I went with two great pieces from Target. Both of these are a few years old but I have literally seen something similar every season. While you may not be able to get the exact stud detail as pictured on my jacket, I am almost positive that you can get something very close. Heck! I will even link one for you at the bottom! As for the stripe dress, well stripes are just about as American as Apple Pie! I love that these stripes are thinner. They don’t make me look as wide which is great for this new Mommy who is still struggling to lose her baby weight!

And speaking of baby weight… let’s be real here for a minute…

I almost didn’t even post these pictures. When I looked at them the only thing that I was able to focus on was the extra “Mom Fluff” around my middle. Losing weight after baby has been something that I have struggled with for a few months now. I am very self-conscience of my midsection, especially since my daughter is almost a year old. Clothes just don’t fit like they use to and I have had to go up in sizes in a few things…

But here’s the thing… I did just have a baby! It took me ten months to put on all that weight so it will take me at least ten months to lose it! I am not some Hollywood actress who can afford a personal trainer and a nanny. I am a real, sleep deprived Mom who works two jobs and tutors. I cook, clean, take care of my family and still somehow find time to write a few blog posts. These pictures make me proud of the woman who I have become and that “Mom Fluff” is the armor of the super woman that I truly am!

So now that I have gotten out my “I am woman, hear me roar” speech, I direct you back to your regularly scheduled outfit review…

For my jewelry, I went with this bold, yellow Kendra Scott Rayne necklace. While this specific color is not available online, you can build it at your local store using the Color Bar or you can build it online with the same tool! My handbag was actually a DIY!  Want to make one of your own? Just check out my blog post where I show you step-by-step how to make one! It was so easy! My sunnies are by Foster Grant and they are a beautiful rose color. I actually saw them at my local CVS when I was picking up a prescription and just fell in love with them!

My sandals are by Naughty Monkey and I got them on super sale last Summer from Belk. They are so colorful and go with so much! I got the idea to wear my yellow Rayne necklace by matching it to the yellow color in the shoe. They are also super comfortable, which is great for an afternoon of walking around Downtown Savannah.

This will definitely be a look that I recreate again. It can easily transition to the Fall or Winter by adding boots or leggings. That is what makes these pieces so timeless and classic. You can literally wear them year round!

Oh! And in case you were wondering… I am drinking a Venti Iced Soy Chai with Vanilla! One of my faves! I can’t wait to get it with Pumpkin Spice this Fall!

An InVESTment

I love me a good vest…

It truly is the perfect piece to transition through the seasons and, if you get it in the right material, you can literally wear it all year long.

This utility vest is exactly that… a year-long piece…

Our Summer’s are HOT in Savannah. Hot really isn’t even a good word. A better word would be scorching. Add in the humidity and you will understand why our weather is considered the armpit of the South. It is because of this that cool, breathable pieces are a must!

My utility vest is an American Eagle find that I scored at the end of the season last Fall for $20. It is lightweight and adjustable so it has easily adjusted through the seasons. I love how long it is because it adds something extra to my dresses and tunics without giving the illusion of cutting me off in the middle. The best part about this vest… it has pockets! I paired it with a dress from Forever 21 that I got earlier in the Summer. It is a little on the shorter side for my usual taste, but it has been so hot this Summer that I really did not mind. The dress was only $12 and is actually really well made for being so cheap. It is fully lined and it has a gold, back zipper detail.

My bag is a Rebecca Minkoff Mini Mac and it is in a beautiful mint color. This picture does not even begin to do it justice. It is such a versatile bag that has easily transitioned with me through all the Seasons. It is actually very roomy very being considered a “mini bag” and I am able to fit everything inside with ease.

My sandals were a birthday gift from my sweet friend Julia of Glitter and Juls. I love the pop of color that they brought to my outfit and I am a sucker for a good boho vibe. I was inspired by the pink in the sandals so I added one of my fave Kendra Scott necklaces to really give my outfit that pop! My sunnies are a few year old but they are Tory Burch.

I am already planning all of the ways that I can wear the vest this Fall! It really is an investment piece and I encourage you all to go out and get you one! Maybe you will get lucky and find one on super sale like I did! If you want some outfit inspo then head over to my Pinterest and give me a follow at Being Mrs. Fowler. I am always pinning outfit ideas for using this vest! Hope you all are having a FAB week!

Jesus Saves Y’all

There is just something about a graphic tank…

Make it a graphic tank about Jesus and that just makes it that much better!

While on vacation this Summer, I saw this tank in a boutique window and had to go in and check it out. The boutique, called Steel Mill, had some of the cutest clothes and the best prices. This tank was less than $25! It is also super soft so getting it was a no-brainer!

My Faith is something that has always been really important to me and with all that is going on in the world today, we could all use a little Jesus! I paired the tank with a pair of super dark denim and the prettiest lace kimono.

For my accessories I went with a basic pair of black sandals and the CUTEST crab bag! I also bought this bag while on vacation. Kate Spade was having the biggest sale so it was practically 75% off!

This is a very casual look but you could easily dress up this tank with a blazer, heels and a cute clutch. It has definitely become a favorite in my wardrobe and I cannot wait to style it different ways!
